The Promises of God (as fulfilled in Christ)
2 Corinthians 1:20
For no matter how many promises God has
made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through
him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.

Isaiah 61:1-3
New International
Version (NIV)
The Year of the Lord’s Favor
61 The Spirit of the
Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim
good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted,
to proclaim
freedom for the
captives
and release
from darkness for the prisoners,[a]
2 to proclaim
the year of the Lord’s favor
and the day
of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
3 and provide for those who grieve in
Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of
ashes,
the oil of joy
instead of
mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a
spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the Lord
for the
display of his splendor.

Luke 4:14-20
New International
Version (NIV)
14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the
power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.15 He was teaching in their synagogues, and
everyone praised him.
16 He went to Nazareth, where he
had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his
custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah
was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has
anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight
for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year
of the Lord’s favour.”[f]
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it
back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of
everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture
is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Acts 2
New International
Version (NIV)
The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
2 When the day
of Pentecost came, they
were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a
violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were
sitting. 3 They saw what
seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy
Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit
enabled them.
5 Now there were
staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from
every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came
together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being
spoken. 7 Utterly
amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are
speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears
them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites;
residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,[b] 10 Phrygia and
Pamphylia, Egypt and the
parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from
Rome 11 (both Jews
and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders
of God in our own tongues!”12 Amazed and
perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
